What does it mean to be 10 Free and why should it matter to you?

10 Free Gel Nail Polish provides you a healthier, safer, non toxic alternative to old-school, traditional nail polish brands.

Being 10 Free means that here at Gelous we have crafted a Gel Nail Polish free of harsh chemicals that have been used in nail polish formulations traditionally. These nasties can be absorbed into the skin and have the ability to cause many terrible side effects. Even when the quantity of these chemicals is low, we think it’s better to not risk it at all - especially because you don’t need to!

Below is a list of the 10 ingredients we DO NOT use in our Gel Polish, their common uses and side effects. The exclusion of the following 10 nasty chemicals from our ingredient list is of the utmost importance to us and we’re sure you will soon understand why this should be important to you too.

What chemicals aren't found in 10 Free Gel Nail Polish?

Our Gel Nail Polish is free from the three toxins known as the "toxic trio"

Formaldehyde: A strong smelling, colourless gas used as a preservative, can cause skin irritation, nausea, allergic reaction such as dermatitis which can lead to an itchy, red rash and may develop blisters. Formaldehyde can also be the cause of some cancers.

Dibutyl Phthalate: Commonly used as a plasticizer or solvent to give that shiny plastic consistency. Can cause skin irritation as well as eye, nose and throat irritation. This chemical can also cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and seizures. Has also been associated with liver and kidney damage.

Toluene: Found in petroleum and the tolu tree functions as a solvent to form the smooth finish. Prolonged use with the chemical can defat the skin, causing it to crack and peel. Through inhalation can cause headache, dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, respiratory depression, hallucinations.

Formaldehyde Resin: Is a polymer which is used in many nail enamel product. It’s soft resin material forms the shiny and tough film in polishes. It can cause dermatitis and other skin irritations.

Camphor: A waxy flammable solid found in the wood of the Camphor Laurel Tree within the East Asian region. However, it is the synthetic version which is used in many nail polishes as a plasticiser to add shine an elasticity and is highly toxic causing nausea, headaches, dizziness and disorientation.

Parabens:Parabens are a widely used preservative in cosmetic products to prolong the shelf life and prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. However, they have been associated with the increased risk in skin and breast cancer.

Ethyl Tosylamide: A chemical used as a plasticizer to increase the durability and longevity of the nail polish. This substance can cause mild to severe allergic reactions and is also known to be a hormonal disrupter.

Xylene: Is a solvent commonly used in many nail polishes to thin out the formula so that it does not go lumpy. Side effects have been proven to cause skin and eye irritation, headaches, nausea and dizziness.

Triphenyl Phosphate: A chemical compound also used as a plasticizer to increase durability and flexibility in the nail polish. This chemical is suggested to have effects on your hormones in particular reproductive health.

Tert-butyl hydroperoxide: Used in the process of oxidation this chemical can be toxic to the blood, lungs and liver and have effects on the respiratory and central nervous system.

Free from Animal Derived Ingredients: Some beauty products contain ingredients such as Guanine (fish scales), Carmine (crushed scale insects) and Oleic Acid (animal fat). Our Gel Nail Polish is completely vegan and contains no animal derived ingredients.

Not Tested on Animals: The suffering of our furry friends is something we are not willing to compromise on. We’ve been able to create a strong, long-lasting Gel Polish without taking part in any animal testing.

Does this mean Gel Nail Polish is completely safe?

Though our Gel Nail Polish is 10 Free, this does not mean it cannot cause harm when used incorrectly. Gel Nail Polish and regular Nail Polish still contain chemicals and care should be taken when applying and removing to avoid any skin irritation or nail damage. Always apply your Gelous Gel Nail Polish in a well ventilated room, carefully following the instructions outlined in our Application Guide and avoid getting any Gel Nail Polish on your skin (and remove prior to curing if you do).
